1) Who did you work with and how did you manage the tasks between you? Explain how you organised your time and schedules. What issues came up with time management? What problems did you come up against? How did you deal with these? What were your strengths and weaknesses in this area? What would you do differently next time?
In the prelim task I worked with Tom Wright. To begin with, we established the storyline in our short sequence and shortly after we decided on the location and began on our storyboard. Our short sequence required us to film a person entering a room and sharing a few lines of dialogue. We organised our time effectively by making the script and the treatment before the deadline. However a problem we encountered was the cast not showing up. Having no cast meant that we had to re-schedule the day we were going to film. When we established the cast we were able to continue with our project. We also had a shooting schedule to manage our time and to also let us know the shot order so there was no confusion. A strength in this area is that we were able to organise factors like the storyboard, location recce and the treatment. A weakness is that we failed on gathering a cast, however this issue was dealt with.
2) How did you plan your sequence? What process did you use?
The first plan of action we carried out was getting a storyline which was put in our treatment. This gave us a basic idea of what we wanted our sequence to be about. The next step was producing a storyboard, which consisted of drawing out each shot. In doing this, we established what we wanted the short sequence to look like visually. It also allowed us to include interesting and varied shots such as low angle shots, high angle shots and over the shoulder shots. We made a storyboard so on the day of filming we know what we want the shot to look like.
3) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it? What did you learn about using the cameras? Here you can also refer to the discussions we have had in class recently about digital cameras
The technology we used to the complete the task was was using a camera and a tripod. During filming I learnt that cameras are difficult to manage. Tripods were at times hard to control and set up. In every new shot we had to constantly check the spirit level to make sure that the camera was leveled properly. The cameras were delicate and expensive technology so we had to handle them with care.
4) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
While in the process of planning we had to take into account location, shot order, storyboard and script. All had to be organised to ensure we was aware of what we were doing while shooting. Once we had established the script and storyboard we made a location recce. The location recce included all the possible problems that may occur during shooting such as people walking past in the background, noise and lighting. To avoid this problem happening we filmed at a time when we knew no people would be walking about. During shooting we monitored each scene by ticking each one we had finished. In doing this we were able to keep track of what scene we were doing. The storyboard also enabled us to keep track of the scenes and was looked out before filming a scene. In addition, the storyboard allowed us to remember the rule of thirds and how the shot should look in the frame. Another crucial factor to take into account is the 180 degree rule and to make sure continuity was consistent. The post-production process brought each shot together which ultimately created our short sequence. To begin with, we cut out all the scenes that were not good enough to put in the film. The selected scenes were cut and assembled to create the sequence.
5) How successful was your sequence? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently?
Overall, I think our sequence was successful and done to the best of our ability. Our short sequence demonstrates good continuity, the 180 degree rule and match on action. We included a wide range of shots to make it more interesting and to draw the audience in. For example, over the shoulder shots, high angled shots, low angled shots etc. The framing makes it visually pleasing due to the rule of thirds. In hindsight if I was to improve I would improve on the planning I did before I did the shooting process. As a team we should of ensured we had all the cast members together so we would have been organised. Next time I would plan so the shooting is done smoothly and without any problems.
6) What have you learnt from completing the task? Discuss time management skills, group work skills, organisational skills and technical skills of production
After completing the task I have been able to realize that I need to work on my planning and organisational skills. However we were able to manage time effectively. During the task we completed the sequence within the time given. As a team I think we worked well together and were able to divide the work evenly, meaning we developed our group skills well. We also were able to keep track of all the technical aspects in this task. The spirit level was checked and we were able to handle the camera.
7) Post production - What did you learn about the editing process? How did you make decisions while editing? How did you plan your time to complete the editing task? What were your strengths and weaknesses in this area? What would you do differently next time?
Whilst editing we learnt that we could cut each scene and manipulate them to suit to what we want the sequence to look like. The decisions we had to make were which ones were the best shot to use and which shots we should delete. The shots we decided to choose had to be the ones that were more fitting to tell the story line. A strength is that i was able to put each scene in order quickly so our time was managed effectively. A weakness in this area is that we used the wrong scene and had to change it.
